Why Mongolian cashmere?
Cashmere begins with landscape. In Mongolia, that landscape is vast, remote and shaped by extremes. Winters can be intensely cold, while summers are dry and surprisingly hot. To survive these dramatic changes in temperature, Mongolian goats grow an exceptionally soft insulating undercoat beneath their coarser outer hair. It is this delicate fibre that becomes cashmere.

Centuries-old tradition
I first travelled to Mongolia as a visitor, long before I understood just how much work and knowledge lie behind a finished cashmere garment. I was drawn in by the country itself: its open landscapes, nomadic traditions and extraordinary hospitality. But I was also struck by the place cashmere occupies within the Mongolian economy and way of life.
For herding families, goats and other livestock are not simply a source of raw material. They are part of a centuries-old pastoral culture, one built around the seasons, the land and the movement of animals. Each spring, when the goats naturally begin to shed their winter undercoat, the cashmere is collected and sorted. The finest fibres are selected before beginning the long journey from raw fleece to yarn and, eventually, to a finished garment.
More than a raw material
Mongolia is one of the world’s most important producers of cashmere, yet much of its raw fibre has historically left the country to be processed elsewhere. For Hero Cashmere, it matters that our pieces are made in Mongolia—from the sourcing and processing of the fibre to the knitting of the finished garment.
Keeping these stages within the country helps retain more of the value and specialist knowledge connected to its most celebrated natural fibre. It also allows us to build genuine, lasting relationships with the people who make our collections.
We regularly return to Mongolia to visit our friends and suppliers, discuss new pieces and understand the production process more closely. Hero Cashmere is a small, independent label, so these relationships are personal. They are an essential part of the brand’s story.
Made to be lived in
Cashmere is often treated as something precious that should be saved for special occasions. We see it differently. Its lightness, warmth and softness make it one of the most practical natural fibres to wear every day.
A good cashmere sweater can be layered beneath a coat in winter, worn alone on a cool evening or tucked into a suitcase without taking up much space. A scarf, hat or pair of socks can turn an ordinary cold day into something markedly more comfortable. The luxury lies not only in how cashmere looks, but in how it feels and how naturally it fits into daily life.
That is why our collections focus on simple, cosy pieces rather than clothes that need an occasion. We want to create cashmere that is worn often, cared for and kept—not admired from a distance.
For us, Mongolian cashmere is more than an exceptionally beautiful fibre. It carries a story of landscape, animals, skilled hands and friendships formed far from home. It is where Hero Cashmere began, and it remains at the heart of everything we make.
